Potty Training, when is the right time to start?

In recent months I have thought more about potty training and when is the right time. Speaking to so many different parents, with their individual experiences and their children, finding the right time, may not even be the right time. When you know, you will know.

My mum told me before Emily started nursery earlier this year that she should be potty trained beforehand. When I spoke to the nursery team when Emily started, they said when the time comes, they will help Emily and make it as comfortable as they can.

I suppose there never is a right time. A couple of weeks ago I thought it was the right time but it wasn’t, I’ve now started to think that in the last few days it was right to, but it hasn’t, and the more I think about it the more I do feel maybe it could be the right time, but it’s not. Emily tells me when she goes, but it’s usually after it’s just happened. She thinks sitting on the toilet is a pure luxury, and gets excited about toilet roll, but isn’t actually interested in doing it, yet.

But, it’s good to know that there’s not really a standard age at which a child is ready to start using the potty. I have a friend whose daughter did it just after her first birthday, and I know friends children who are starting to do it at three years of age. I know we are near the stage, but Emily at the moment, isn’t ready. Although Emily is little Miss Independent, when the time comes for it, she’ll let me know.

When I ask any questions, Emily listens but if it’s a direct question about something she’s doing, she’s unsure, sometimes hesitant or happy to tell me after it has occurred. I know that when it happens, we will be ready. She is starting to question things more, and by showing this interest I know it will only be a few weeks until we start potty training.
